Amazon S3 – What’s it all about?

Amazon storage

There are a number of cloud storage options available, all with their own advantages and disadvantages, but what can Amazon’s latest offering bring to the table?

Amazon S3 is an object storage system, and with the huge amount of user-generated content uploaded to social media sites like Facebook and Twitter and media websites like Tumblr, Flickr and Pinterest there is pressure on these web services to provide a seamless, secure service. The rapid rise in popularity of these sites and other services such as online video streaming services means that these businesses have to adapt and grow rapidly. Rather than develop and build on in-house storage systems, many businesses are turning to Amazon S3 for help.

What is it and why does it matter?

Essentially, Amazon S3 is a storage service that can be used for a variety of cases from static data for a web page or app to long-term data backup. Amazon understands that different businesses have different requirements and for this reason they have three different storage options available:

Standard Storage – The best option for cases where high availability and constant access is needed.

Standard Infrequent Storage – Best for cases where high availability is required but access is a lot less frequent, such as backups.

Glacier Storage – The best option for cases that require the archive of data where immediate access isn’t necessary.

The best thing about these options is that usage is assessed on a monthly basis and billing is calculated based on usage, rather than paying upfront. It also means that anyone can use Amazon S3, from a single user to a larger, more established business.

Using a system such as Amazon S3 reduces your storage costs significantly and eliminates the high costs and technical issues associated with planning and building your own storage solution on-site.
