Consumer giant Which? condemns Windows 10

Consumer rights group Which? has criticised Microsoft over its Windows 10 software. Having received hundreds of complaints about the latest upgrade from lost files to emails not synchronising. Some unhappy customers have even had to pay out for their computers to be fixed.

Microsoft responded by emphasising that they were available to help via phone or online for free, however a lot of complaints received by Which? were unhappy with the quality of customer service given by Microsoft.

Which? surveyed more than 5,500 of its members, 12% of the 2,500 who had chosen to upgrade to Windows 10 revealed that they later reverted back to a previous version. Customers said that thy felt “nagged” by Microsoft to upgrade, with constant alerts and notifications to upgrade. Even after discarding the alerts, users found themselves automatically upgraded.

Alex Neill, Which? director of campaigns and policy, added: “We rely heavily on our computers to carry out daily activities, so, when they stop working, it is frustrating and stressful.

“Many people are having issues with Windows 10, and we believe Microsoft should be doing more to fix the problem.”

Windows 10 was first released in July 2015 for a one-year free upgrade. The update was designed to run across a multitude of products, laptops, desktops, smartphones and even Microsoft’s virtual reality headset, HoloLens.

The most recent problem that affected millions who updated to Windows 10 was that users found that their webcams permanently disabled. An engineer for Microsoft acknowledged that more should have been done to make users aware of the update.

It may be that problems would be inevitable with a roll out of this size however the real test will be how Microsoft respond and assist their customers with the update that some didn’t even want.
