Business Broadband – What do I need?

Nowadays, even the smallest of businesses can enter the global market, simply because they have access to the internet. At ITC we recognise that every business uses their broadband differently but we understand how important a reliable service is to the smooth running of your business. There is a huge range of broadband services out there, so how do you know which is best?

An IP address is a bit like a telephone number, when you call it you want the same person to be at the end of the phone every time. If you are connected to the internet your computer will generate an IP address, this IP identifies the computer that you are using at the time. Static IPs are typically the best for businesses as it allows for the connection to other networks and servers. It lets you offer customers a connection to something you have on-site, such as emails, media servers or gaming servers. If you plan to do a lot of business over the internet, then a static IP address gives you a look of professionalism and consistency. The main issue with static IP addresses is vulnerability, they are easier for hackers to breach so alternative security measures and software are necessary to protect your business. Some packages offer dynamic IP addresses, which means that your IP changes periodically, this helps with the security issue but do not allow for the extra connectivity options that come with a static IP.

There are a lot of providers out there, all offering the best customer service and fastest speeds so it is important to do your research. There are two main options available; leased lines, which tend to be for home connections, you share the line with other users and if one user maxes out the line then it will affect everyone. A dedicated line is for those that cannot be without internet, like businesses. It allows connection between branches, on top of these options, ITC offer EFM connections which is great if your bandwidth needs aren’t huge. EFM lines offer a consistent service even if a component line fails.

There are a few main factors that you need to consider when deciding on your business broadband. If you are considering offering web hosting and email addresses, then take care to consider anti-virus and anti-spam filtering. Some providers offer an inclusive Business Voice (VoIP) service, installing a business line for incoming and outgoing calls. Consider storage options too, consider cloud software for backing up purposes and security reasons too.
